A young boy climbs out from under a chair.

Create an obstacle course by setting up five obstacles (things like chairs, baskets, or large toys).

Draw a map of your obstacle course on paper and talk about what each drawing represents.

Help draw a route on the map from one obstacle to the next by asking these questions:

  • Where should the starting point of the obstacle course be? (Draw a star on the map.)
  • Which obstacle should come first, second, third, and so on? (Draw the route.)
  • What should you do when you reach each obstacle: go over, under, around, behind, or in front of it?
  • Where’s the end of the course? (Draw an X on the map.)

Then try it out! Call out the obstacles and what to do at each one. Then reverse roles.

Make a new obstacle course and a new map on another day. Try it in a different part of your home or go outside.

Note: Learning left and right takes repetition and practice, usually over several years! Take your time and have fun together!
