Bugs on a Rock

Subitizing
Snack

Children assemble snacks with edible sets of “bugs.”

A teacher shows a dot plate to preschool children sitting at a table for snack. Four young children reach for snacks on a serving plate.

Flash a dot plate and have children call out the number they see.

Have the children take that number of snack food items from a plate.

Materials

Materials used in Bugs on a Rock.
  • Use any snack foods you have. Good combinations include: crackers, rice cakes, apple slices, or celery sticks; a spread such as hummus, spreadable cheese, or yogurt; and raisins, dried cherries, or cereal to create the “bugs.” WATCH OUT FOR FOOD ALLERGIES.
  • Dot Plates OR Picture Plates from activities on Lessons 1 and 5, respectively
  • Paper plates or bowls for the children and the snack foods

Preparation

  1. Place snack items on table in separate plates or bowls.
  2. Set out a plate for each child to eat on.

Directions

  1. One-by-one, flash different dot plates to determine how many pieces of each snack food the children will get. To reinforce children’s subitizing skills, make sure to show the plates for only two seconds.
  2. Have the children call out the number of dots and take that number of pieces of snack food. Check that children have subitized correctly.
  3. Have each child build a snack using crackers, apple slices, or celery sticks as a base, topped by the spread or yogurt and the “bugs.” To promote math talk, ask the children, What bug did you make and why? How many bugs did you use? How is that number the same or different from (name of another child)?
