Gracie and the Goat

Spatial Thinking
Hands-On

Children pick a card and use the Gracie and goat character props to match the positions on the card.

A man holds up a card showing a spatial relationship between a cartoon girl and a goat while two kids position paper bags with the characters.

Children practice using spatial language as they arrange the character props.

Materials

A paper bag next to scissors, tape, and printouts of the Gracie character, a goat, and spatial vocabulary cards.

Preparation

  1. Print and cut out the Gracie and the Goat Cards and Character Props.
  2. Create a way for the cut-out Character Props to stand upright: Tape them to empty paper bags, large blocks, to pieces of cardboard folded in half, or come up with your own method.

Directions

  1. Stack the cards face down in a pile. Have one child choose a card. Read what it says.
  2. Have children arrange the position of the Gracie and the Goat Character Props so they match their positions on the card.
  3. Ask children to compare Gracie and the goat’s positions to the card. Are Gracie and the goat in the correct positions? Ask them to describe their positions (e.g., The goat is in front of Gracie.)
