Children decorate picture frames with assorted seeds. At the end of the unit, a photo of each child with his/her favorite plant will be inserted in these frames.
Materials
- Collection of 4–5 different types of seeds––various shapes, sizes, colors, and textures (such as, sunflower, lima bean, corn, chickpea, and kidney bean seeds)
- Marker or pen
- 1 mat board picture frame per child
- Paper plates or bowls
- White glue or glue stick
Preparation
- Place a collection of seeds on a few paper plates.
- Put the plates on the work table. Children will share the plates of seeds.
Directions: Lessons 1, 3
Learning Center
- Write each child’s name on the back of a frame. Then have children glue seeds onto their picture frames.
- Encourage children to talk about the size, shape, color, and texture of the seeds. Possible discussion ideas:
- I see you are using different seeds on your picture frame. Tell me about this seed.
- What color/shape is it? What does it feel like? Can you describe it?
- Compare two seeds. Is this seed bigger or smaller than that seed?
- Is there another seed on your picture frame that looks just like this one?
- As children make their frames, ask what they would do to help the seeds grow into plants. Possible discussion ideas:
- Which seed is your favorite? How would you help the seed to grow into a plant?
- What does the seed need to grow?
Note: Later in the unit, a photo of the child with his/her favorite plant will be put into this picture frame. (See the Science Talk: Plant Parts activity.)
