Preparation

  1. Familiarize yourself with the words and actions of the fingerplay “Dig a Little Hole.” Print the lyrics if you wish.

Circle Time: Wrap-Up
  1. Have children join you in doing the actions of this fingerplay. Soon they will also be able to chant the words to “Dig a Little Hole.”
    • Dig a little hole (pretend to dig)
      Plant a little seed (pretend to drop in seed)
      Pour a little water (pretend to water)
      Pull a little weed (pretend to pull up weed)

    • Chase a little rabbit (flick hand to shoo off rabbit)
      Where did it go? (place hand above eye and look left and right)
      Here comes the sunshine . . . (form circle with hands above head)
      Watch my bean plant grow! (hold a fist in front of chest and slowly raise your arm straight as you unfold all 10 fingers)

  2. After acting out the fingerplay, talk about plants. Possible discussion ideas:
    • In this fingerplay, what do we do to help our bean plant grow?
    • How does the sun help the bean plant grow? Explain that the sunlight gives energy to the plant; the energy helps the plant grow.
    • Have children pretend that they are young bean plants soaking up energy from the sun and growing.
