Have you ever seen a garden growing plants we can eat? What kind of plants were they?

 

Materials


  • Planting Project video on iPads (1 for Circle Time; several for Learning Center)
  • Projector (if available)

Preparation

  1. Familiarize yourself with the video Planting Project.
 

Directions: Lesson 7


Circle Time: Introduction
  1. Tell the group they are going to watch a video, Planting Project, about children growing tomatoes and sunflowers. Ask, Has anyone seen a garden that grows plants we can eat? What kind of plants were they?
  2. After watching the video, engage children in a discussion. Possible discussion ideas:
    • How did the tomato and sunflower plants change from the beginning of the video to the end of the video?
    • How did the people in the video help the plants grow?
    • Have you ever eaten a tomato, like the children in the video? What did it taste like? What did the children find inside the tomato? Can you eat the seeds inside a tomato?
    • A sunflower plant has a beautiful big flower. What part of a sunflower can you eat? (the seeds) Has anyone ever eaten sunflower seeds? Birds love to eat sunflower seeds, and many people do too.
    • What do you think would happen to our bean plants if we took them outside and planted them in a garden?
  3. Encourage children to talk about how plants and animals depend on one another to grow and live. Possible discussion ideas:
    • What are some things the children do to help the plants grow?
    • What are some ways the plants are helping the children grow?

Circle Time: Introduction
  1. Tell the group they are going to rewatch the video, Planting Project, about children growing tomatoes and sunflowers. Has anyone seen a garden that grows plants we can eat? What kind of plants were in the garden?
  2. After watching the video, engage children in a discussion. Possible discussion ideas:
    • How did the tomato and sunflower plants change from the beginning of the video to the end of the video?
    • How did the people in the video help the plants grow? Do we do any of those things to help our plants grow?
    • Have you ever eaten a tomato, like the children in the video? What did it taste like? What did the children find inside the tomato? Can you eat the seeds inside a tomato?

Circle Time: Wrap-Up
  1. Rewatch the Planting Project video and observe what happens closely.
  2. Engage children in conversation about:
    • The seeds planted in the video
    • What they predict will happen to the seeds and plants as they grow
    • What changes they observe happening to the plants in the video
  3. Make connections to the plants they have been growing in the classroom. How do you think our plants will change as they continue to grow?
 

Directions: Lesson 11


Circle Time: Introduction
  1. Tell the group they are going to watch Planting Project. Has anyone seen a garden that grows plants we can eat? What kind of plants were in the garden?
  2. After watching the video, make connections to the classroom plants. Possible discussion ideas:
    • What plant parts do you see in the egg carton plants? Compare those plants to our class plants. Do they have the same or different parts?
    • How did the tomato and sunflower plants change from the beginning of the video to the end of the video? How have our plants changed from when we planted the seeds?
    • How did the people help the plants grow? Name something we do to help our plants grow.
