Children make texture collages inside box lids. They roll a marble over the bumpy terrain and notice the way it moves.
Materials

- Box lids
- Children’s scissors
- Collage materials with interesting textures: for example, craft sticks, pipe cleaners, aluminum foil, Styrofoam peanuts, cotton balls, bubble wrap, coarse sandpaper, felt, ribbon, corrugated paper, thick yarn or string
- Large marble
- Tape
- White glue
Preparation
- Gather box lids and collage materials.
Directions: Lessons 8, 9
Learning Center
- Children can work individually or in pairs to create texture collages.
- Have groups of children create texture collages in large box lids by taping and/or gluing different textured materials in the lid. When the collage is complete, children can place a large marble in the box lid and tip the lid to make the marble roll over and around the bumpy terrain.
- Encourage children to feel the materials and talk about their different textures. How do you think a marble will move over this material? Why do you think so? Reinforce descriptive words such as rough, smooth, scratchy, and fuzzy.
- As a child tips the lid to make the marble roll, have him or her describe the marble’s movement. Possible discussion ideas:
- The marble is slowing down. Now it’s speeding up. Why do you think it started going faster?
- Now it’s moving in a bumpy way. What do you think is making it bump and stop like that?
SAFETY ALERT: Marbles can be a choking hazard to children. Make sure children understand that they are never to put marbles in their mouths. Monitor children when they are playing with marbles to ensure that they are using them responsibly and safely.
