Where Can My Shadow Be?

Shadows
Books & Songs

Children sing and act out a song, turning so that their shadows are in front of, next to, and behind them.

Outdoors, a teacher can be seen bending to talk to a group of students, who play with their shadows on the sidewalk. Four students walk behind a teacher, towards the door of a building. It is sunny, and their shadows are clearly visible.

Go outside and look for your shadows.

Walk with your shadow in front of you.

Preparation

  1. Print a copy of the Where Can My Shadow Be?: Lyrics PDF and familiarize yourself with the words of the song, sung to the tune of “Oh Where, Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone?”
  2. SAFETY ALERT: Each time you go outside, remind children to never look at the sun because it can harm their eyes.

Directions: Lessons 4, 9

Outdoors
  1. Introduce children to positional words. Have children act out a few of the positions.
  2. Go outside on a sunny day to a clear area where children can easily observe their shadows. Have children turn so their shadows are in front of them. Have them walk, following their shadows.
  3. Then have children turn so their shadows are next to them and hop with their shadow to the side.
  4. Finally, have them turn so their shadows are behind them and march ahead of their shadows.
  5. Sing the song “Where Can My Shadow Be?” to the tune of “Oh Where, Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone?” Have children sway to the music, then turn so their shadows are in front of, next to, and behind them, as the words direct:
    • Oh where, oh where has my shadow gone?
Oh where, oh where can it be?
In front? Next to me? Or maybe behind?
Oh where can my shadow be?
