  1. Sing the song “This Is the Way We Plant the Seeds” together as you act out the sequence of planting and watering seeds, then waiting as the sun shines down for the plants to grow. The words are sung to the tune of “Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush.”
    • (Pretend to plant seeds.)
This is the way we plant the seeds,
Plant the seeds, plant the seeds.
This is the way we plant the seeds.
Plant the seeds in our garden.

    • (Pretend to water seeds with a watering can.)
This is the way we water the seeds,
Water the seeds, water the seeds.

This is the way we water the seeds.
Water the seeds in our garden.

    • (Raise arms in a circle above head. Pretend to be the sun, shining down on the seeds.)
This is the way the sun shines down,

Sun shines down, sun shines down.
This is the way the sun shines down.
      Shines down on our garden.

    • (Rest head in your hand. Drum your fingers, tap your foot, and sigh—waiting, impatiently.)
This is the way we watch and wait,

Watch and wait, watch and wait.
This is the way we watch and wait.
Watch and wait for our garden.

    • (Pretend to be a seed, sprouting stem and roots, then growing leaves.)
This is the way the seeds start to grow,
Start to grow, start to grow.
This is the way the seeds start to grow.

The seeds start to grow in our garden.

  2. Ask children, What are some of the things a seed needs in order to grow? Mime the actions (watering the seed, pretending to be the sun, waiting for the seed to grow) to prompt responses: water, sun, and time. Invite children to mime the actions as well.

Note: As an extension, you can sing this song during transitions between activities.
