Week 1: Seed Observation and How We Measure

Children listen to and discuss the book, The Carrot Seed, by Ruth Krauss

As children sing, they mime the steps of planting and caring for a seed and waiting for it to grow.

Children explore a virtual farm and discover how a balance of light and water helps plants grow. In the Kitchen, they make salad from vegetables that are leaves, stems, roots, and fruits.

Children observe and discuss the sprouting bean seeds. They draw a picture of the sprout emerging from the seed and add labels.

Children photograph and describe their bean plants in a bag. Then they take a photo and discuss their bean plants growing in soil. Once a bean plant has emerged from the soil, they also record the plant’s measurement.

Children throw a giant dice and remove cards from a game board if the dice shows a source of water or light that will help a plant grow.

Children sort a selection of four to five types of seeds that differ in size, shape, color, and texture and discuss what the seeds need to help them grow.
