Week 4: Build Ramps and Pathways

Lesson 10

Children build ramps and explore how different objects roll down the ramps.

Circle Time: Introduction

Homemade Hill
5 min.

A teacher holds up an iPad to show a class of students a video.

In this video, children build a hill out of a sofa cushion. They try to slide a smooth plastic surfboard and a fuzzy toy bird down their homemade hill. After watching the video, children try a similar experiment in their own classroom.

Coconut Canyon, Levels 1-4
5-15 min.

Children explore using different textured materials to build a pathway that will make a coconut roll onto the star. They choose and test using bumpy grass and less bumpy dirt to see how far the coconut will roll.

Guided Small Group

Smooth & Rough Ramp Experiments
15 min.

A student sits on the floor next to two cardboard ramps leaning against the wall. One ramp is covered in tin-foil and the other is covered in bubble wrap.

Children compare the distance two identical objects travel when they slide down a smooth ramp and a rough ramp. They use the digital Ramps Journal to make predictions and document and analyze results.

Ramps, Pathways and Games: Part 1
5-15 min.

Two students kneel behind cardboard ramps. One student is about to let a round object roll down the steeper of the ramps.

Children build steep and gentle ramps from sheets of cardboard. They explore which objects move faster and slower down the ramps.

Exploring Textured Ramps
5-15 min.

Four students slide wooden blocks down cardboard ramps covered in different textured materials.

Children compare the effect of different textured surfaces as they slide and roll objects down the ramps.

Toys on Ramps
5-15 min.

Students send objects down a ramp setup toward an obstacle.

Children build ramps and then send small toys or objects down the ramps.

Coconut Canyon
5-15 min.

Children explore textured bumpy grass, less bumpy dirt and smooth metal materials to try to move a coconut along a pathway onto the star.

Coconut Star
5-10 min.

Coconut Star app screenshot.

Children try to make a coconut land on a star while exploring how the amount of force, the steepness of a ramp, and the surface texture of the pathway affect how far a coconut will roll.

Coconut Star, Levels 13-16
5-10 min.

In these "challenge" levels, children manipulate initial force, ramp steepness and surface texture in order to make the coconut travel the path and stop at the pre-set star.
