Week 4: Build Ramps and Pathways

Lesson 11

Children build, test, and revise pathways and obstacle courses that have ramps and flat surfaces.

Circle Time: Introduction

Around the Obstacle Course
20 min.

Teacher and students test a cardboard ramp.

Children design a sled track made of ramps and flat surfaces to move a “summer sled” through a town obstacle course.

Coconut Canyon, Levels 5-12
5-15min.

Smooth metal is added to the textured material choices (bumpy grass and less bumpy dirt) for children to explore. They test using the three textures to build a pathway that will land the coconut on the star.

Ramps, Pathways and Games: Part 2
5-15 min.

Students and a teacher gather round as a boy prepares to roll a marble down a wooden ruler propped up by wooden blocks.

Add new materials to the Learning Center that enable children to build pathways for marbles, such as cardboard tubes, foam pipe insulation tubes, and/or wooden cove molding.

Rolling Marble Art
5-15 min.

A student tilts a tray with a piece of paper, a marble, and some red and blue paint. The marble is rolling and creating patterns with the paint.

Children roll paint-covered marbles in a paper-lined box lid or tray.

Exploring Textured Ramps
5-15 min.

Four students slide wooden blocks down cardboard ramps covered in different textured materials.

Children compare the effect of different textured surfaces as they slide and roll objects down the ramps.

View Activity

Coconut Star
5-10 min.

Coconut Star app screenshot.

Children try to make a coconut land on a star while exploring how the amount of force, the steepness of a ramp, and the surface texture of the pathway affect how far a coconut will roll.
