Week 3: Ramps and Textures

Lesson 8

Children explore how texture and friction affect how far and fast objects slide and roll.

Circle Time: Introduction

Smooth, Fuzzy, Bumpy
5-8 min.

A seated student feels a piece of bubble wrap as another student looks on.

Children pass around items with different textures and describe how they feel. Then they compare how it feels to skate in sock feet on a smooth floor versus a fuzzy carpet.

Coconut Star: Explore Surface Texture
5-10 min.

Coconut Star app screenshot.

A split-screen with two ramps lets children explore and compare how surface texture (dirt, grass, metal) affects how far and how fast a coconut rolls.

Guided Small Group

Textured Blocks
5 min.

A cardboard ramp supported with wooden blocks is set up on a table. A student slides a block, covered in textured material, down the ramp.

Children send blocks wrapped with different textures down cardboard ramps and compare how fast they slide.

Ramp Rider
10 min.

A student holds up a pink stuffed dog that she has placed in a plastic tub.

Children try to slide a stuffed animal down a cardboard ramp, then design a slippery “sled” that will let the animal slide more smoothly. They record “before” and “after” videos

Texture Collage
5-15 min.

A cardboard box lid filled with a collage of materials of different textures and colors.

Children make texture collages inside box lids. They roll a marble over the bumpy terrain and notice the way it moves.

Coconut Star
5-10 min.

Coconut Star app screenshot.

Children try to make a coconut land on a star while exploring how the amount of force, the steepness of a ramp, and the surface texture of the pathway affect how far a coconut will roll.

Design a Bowling Lane and Let’s Bowl!
15-20 min.

Two students pick up water bottles knocked over by ball.

Children design a bowling game that will fit in a classroom space. They observe how a ball moves down different lane designs. Can you make the ball go faster? Slow down? Stop?
