Week 3: Ramps and Textures

Lesson 9

Children continue to explore how texture and friction affect how objects roll and slide down a ramp.

Circle Time: Introduction

Watch Them Slide
5 min.

A teacher kneels on the floor over a baking tray with four different small objects lined up at one end.

Children observe and compare how objects with different textures slide down a surface.

Coconut Star, Levels 7-12
5-10 min.

Coconut Star app screenshot.

Children explore how different surface textures (dirt, grass, and metal) affect how far and how fast a coconut rolls.

Guided Small Group

Smooth & Rough Ramp Experiments
15 min.

A student sits on the floor next to two cardboard ramps leaning against the wall. One ramp is covered in tin-foil and the other is covered in bubble wrap.

Children compare the distance two identical objects travel when they slide down a smooth ramp and a rough ramp. They use the digital Ramps Journal to make predictions and document and analyze results.

Down They Go
5 min.

Close up of a teacher writing some different textured surfaces on a poster.

In this video, children at a park roll objects down grassy hills and paved walkways and make observations and comparisons about how far the objects roll.

Texture Collage
5-15 min.

A cardboard box lid filled with a collage of materials of different textures and colors.

Children make texture collages inside box lids. They roll a marble over the bumpy terrain and notice the way it moves.

Exploring Textured Ramps
5-15 min.

Four students slide wooden blocks down cardboard ramps covered in different textured materials.

Children compare the effect of different textured surfaces as they slide and roll objects down the ramps.

Coconut Star
5-15 min.

Coconut Star app screenshot.

Children try to make a coconut land on a star while exploring how the amount of force, the steepness of a ramp, and the surface texture of the pathway affect how far a coconut will roll.

Ramp Rider
10 min.

A student holds up a pink stuffed dog that she has placed in a plastic tub.

Children try to slide a stuffed animal down a cardboard ramp, then design a slippery “sled” that will let the animal slide more smoothly. They record “before” and “after” videos

Outdoors

Hills and Surfaces
15 min.

Students in a sandy playground, prepare to roll large plastic balls.

Children roll balls and other objects down a variety of outdoor surfaces (grass, dirt, pavement). They observe how far the objects roll on surfaces and what causes the objects to stop.

Hills and Surfaces Revisited
5 min.

Two students and a teacher, at a table, looking at an iPad.

Children view teacher-recorded videos of their outdoor experiences and talk about what they learned from rolling objects down different-textured surfaces.
