Week 2: Ramps and Steepness

Lesson 6

Children explore how the steepness of a ramp affects how far an object rolls.

Circle Time: Introduction

The Slide Fingerplay
5 min.

A student smiles as she demonstrates a sliding motion using her fingers on her own arm.

Children discuss experiences with playground slides, then learn the fingerplay “The Slide.” They discuss how the force of gravity makes things move down the slide.

Coconut Star: Explore—Which Rolls Farther?
5-10 min.

Coconut Star app screenshot.

Children set the steepness of two ramps and send two identical coconuts down the ramps, comparing the distance they roll. They share ideas about why one coconut rolled farther than the other, or why both coconuts rolled the same distance.

Guided Small Group

Steep & Gentle Ramp Experiments
15 min.

Two students are rolling cardboard tubes down two differently sloping cardboard ramps.

Children compare the distance two identical objects travel when they roll down a steep and a gentle ramp. They use the Steep & Gentle Ramps tool in their digital Ramps Journal to make predictions and document and analyze their results.

Rolling Marble Art
5-15 min.

A student tilts a tray with a piece of paper, a marble, and some red and blue paint. The marble is rolling and creating patterns with the paint.

Children roll paint-covered marbles in a paper-lined box lid or tray.

Coconut Star
5-10 min.

Coconut Star app screenshot.

Children try to make a coconut land on a star while exploring how the amount of force, the steepness of a ramp, and the surface texture of the pathway affect how far a coconut will roll.

Which Is Faster?
10 min.

Students cheer and point after an object has gone down a cardboard ramp that they are sitting next to.

Children send two objects down a single ramp to find out which one rolls faster. They predict what will happen if they increase the steepness of the ramp. Will the same object still be faster?

Ramp Rolling
10 min.

A student and teacher kneel over a gently sloping cardboard ramp. The student holds a pencil in front of two toy cars, to keep them from going down the ramp.

The class observes how the children in this video build ramps from everyday objects and race objects down the ramps.

Steep & Gentle Ramp Review
5-10 min.

A teacher holds an iPad up and points to the screen. Students look on.

Children reexamine the Results chart of their Steep & Gentle Ramps experiments and draw some conclusions: Which ramp made the objects go farther—the steep ramp or the gentle ramp?
