Week 1: Making Shadows

Using a flashlight as a light source, children locate and discuss their own hand shadows.

Children listen to and discuss the book Guess Whose Shadow? by Stephen Swinburne.

Children learn how to use the camera in Cool Shadows, a tool in the Shadows Journal app.

Children observe their own shadows indoors and explore making their shadows move and change.

Children cast shadows on a “shadow wall,” using a flashlight, their hands, and small toys.

Children look at and discuss Cool Shadows photos the class has taken of interesting shadows.

Children move, sing and dance, and watch their shadows do the same. They document their shadows with the Cool Shadows tool.

Children sing and move to an action song about their shadows.
